LOS ANGELES – Low-income Los Angeles residents and anyone who has lost earnings during the coronavirus pandemic will be able to apply for prepaid debit cards beginning on Tuesday.
The Los Angeles Mayor’s Fund launched the Angeleno Campaign in an effort to raise $10 million to help families in need of income during the coronavirus pandemic.
The program will provide debit cards with $700, $1,100 or $1,500 to residents with incomes that were below the federal poverty line before to the safer-at-home orders or if residents have fallen into hardship' from reduced work or income cut by at least 50%, announced Mayor Eric Garcetti on Monday.
People can apply for the debit cards online here or by calling 213-252-3040 starting at 8:30 a.m. The application deadline is 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
Starting this week families can apply for assistance through no-fee debit cards, which will be distributed at designated Community Centers.
“It is essential that we keep as many families out of crisis as possible during this time. Neighbors helping neighbors can make a huge difference. That's what the Angeleno Campaign is all about,” said Mayor Eric Garcetti.
Up to 20,000 residents are targeted to need help. The campaign received a major contribution from native Los Angeles resident and NBA superstar Russell Westbrook.
